Italian and some French. That’s what you can expect in the menu of Mama Lou’s Italian Kitchen. It’s a great place for your friends and family to enjoy awesome food. (full menu at the bottom of the article)
The prices are reasonable. In fact, they’re more affordable than other fine dining restaurants serving the same dishes. And trust me, the food here is superb. Richard Tremblay, the owner, said the dishes that make it to their menu come from months of trial and error until they’ve perfected the recipes.
Here’s my top 10 list of must-orders:
10. Mama Lou’s Iced Tea
It’s fruity and the hint of basil makes this extra special.
9. Lasagna
That’s savory lasagna cooked in their brick oven with their homemade bechamel sauce, meat sauce, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
8. Carpaccio di Manzo
This was a new experience. I was excited. Thinly sliced raw beef marinated with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, topped with capers, olives, some greens and shaved Parmesan cheese. I squeezed a lot of lemon on the beef and it changed color a bit. The lemon’s acidity cooked the meat.
7. Mama Lou’s Special Pizza
This is truly special. This bestseller is Mama Lou’s “Filipinized” pizza mainly because of the mangoes added to it. It works. This pizza has tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, mango, arugula, and balsamic cream. It comes with arugula and alfalfa on the side, just like all their pizzas. You have the option of putting the arugula and alfalfa on the pizza, roll it, and eat it like a pizza roll.
6. Escargot
Having this made me feel classy. It’s a famous French appetizer that I always see on TV but isn’t readily available here. Finally I get to enjoy escargot two ways. Mama Lou’s serves “Old Escargot” and that’s imported snail cooked in the oven with butter, garlic and parsley. They make use of porcelain shells imported from France, not real shells. The “New Escargot” I like better. Shells aren’t used here. The imported snails are mixed with some carrots, celery, garlic, butter and cheese. The “New Escargot” for me is tastier and creamier.
5. Spaghetti Seafood Olio
It’s delicious. The garlicky taste and the seafood flavors wonderfully come together. It’s one of Mama Lou’s bestsellers.
4. Risotto Tartufo Funghi
When I first saw this risotto, it looked plain with white and yellow colors. Don’t let looks fool you because this is really good. It’s cheesy and creamy. And with truffle added, it levels up. It took four months of perfecting this risotto before it made it to the menu, so that’s some assurance for me that they worked hard to create this.
3. Truffle Mac and Cheese
This is a feel-good treat. I don’t know why but having the truffle mac and cheese makes me feel younger, more alive. It’s rich and creamy and the truffle oil makes this heavenly. Richard uses three kinds of cheese, plus truffle oil from Italy.
2. Bacon Poutine
French fries topped with gravy, mozzarella and bacon. It’s a winner! I’ve had a lot of poutines from different restaurants but Mama Lou’s makes the best. It’s not surprising because Richard came from Quebec, Canada where poutine originated. He grew up with it.
1. Marbled Rib Eye Steak
The medium-rare steak is not just super tender, but it oozes with flavor. It’s imported from Australia. Richard said the butter is probably one of the secrets for increasing the taste of the meat, plus the butter-sauteed mushrooms on top.
